HEY! I'M VIVIAN
If you asked me five years ago, I would’ve told you that I NEVER thought in my wildest dream I could make my health & fitness passion a thriving, sustainable career.
That was mainly because my parents had told me that I had to be either a doctor, engineer, or lawyer if I wanted to be able to support myself… luckily, I challenged their beliefs and decided to instead, believe in myself & my own potential abilities – and here I am – three years later – a full time certified nutrition & fitness coach doing what I’ve LOVED since I was 13 years old!
If you’re here reading this, you probably already know that yes, I am a fitness coach – no surprise here! However, I want to share with you how exactly I got to be where I am today because like I previously mentioned, it was not at all something I ever imagined could be possible!
Let me take you back 12 years ago when I was just 13 years old. At this time, my brother who is six years older than me was my ALL TIME role model. He did amazing in school, sports and was incredibly disciplined with his nutrition and workout regimen – it was clear to me from a young age that my brother was a GO GETTER and I was so inspired by him constantly.
He went to the gym every single day, and as soon as I turned 13 – the minimum age to join the gym my brother went to – I signed up and tagged along with him whenever he would go.
Of course he didn’t want his little sister cramping his style, so I would do my own workouts whenever I’d go with him. This was definitely a blessing in disguise because it forced me to research a TON. I wasn’t the type to just go into the gym and try out some machines – I wanted to make sure I knew what exactly I was doing and WHY I was doing it. I initially learned about bodybuilding style training since that’s what I saw my brother doing and bodybuilding style nutrition (which at that time was a lot of egg whites, chicken breast, veggies, etc.).
I was 100% dedicated to a bodybuilding nutrition and workout regimen for about 6 months and even though I was incredibly young, I saw some amazing results. Of course, however, I got bored with having such a regimented, structured program with zero variability and ended up trying different styles of training such as: Group classes, HIIT training, endurance running, trail running and endurance swimming. I became absolutely addicted to working out! Over the years I was never specifically dedicated to any one style of training which I thoroughly enjoyed because I didn’t have a specific physique goal at the time and the variability allowed me to never get bored of exercising and learn new techniques & skills that I previously didn’t know!
As for nutrition… well – I struggled pretty hard in this department. After experimenting with a bodybuilding style diet at the ripe old age of thirteen, I quickly developed binge eating tendencies because I had deprived myself for so long of variety of foods/nutrients that I didn’t know my body needed… Eating only chicken breast, egg whites and vegetables for 6 months straight is a quick & easy way to drive yourself insane!
After those 6 dedicated months, I battled my mind constantly between wanting to be disciplined in eating what I considered at the time ‘clean’ foods and wanting to eat every bag of chips and tub of ice cream my parents had in their kitchen! It was quite difficult at the time because being so young, I wasn’t sure what was going on with my habits and why I felt this uncontrollable need to eat everything that I thought was unhealthy.
It wasn’t until several years later when I started learning about human physiology/psychology that I learned how detrimental the effects can be from severe dieting/restriction – especially when you’re a young, vulnerable teenage girl.
Regardless of my struggles though, I was determined to get better. I was determined to find a healthy lifestyle that would allow me to have a good relationship with food – but let me tell you, this took YEARS. It wasn’t overnight and there were months where I’d fall back into old restrictive eating habits.
It wasn’t until I reached college that I started to think about food in terms of fueling my body and how it was actually affected me physiologically instead of JUST thinking about food as ‘will this make me gain vs. lose weight?’ that I actually started to develop a calm & peaceful relationship with food.
I actually ended up becoming plant-based for 3 years (from 18 to 21 years old) and at this time, I put my focus on eating whole, unprocessed foods that made me feel vibrant & energized without any restriction. This did WONDERS for my mindset because I felt like for this first time, I was truly healthy & thriving inside and out!
I am now 25 years old and I am no longer plant-based, but my mindset is still focused on prioritizing whole, unprocessed foods and like I mentioned previously, has been my savior when it comes to my relationship with food because it no longer feels like ‘Me vs. Food’ but rather ‘Me working WITH food as a team’!
I mentioned in the beginning how my parents wanted me to become either a doctor, engineer or lawyer so I actually went to college to eventually become a doctor and I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Microbiology & Immunology, however, once I graduated at 21 years old, I decided to take a gap year because in my heart, I knew that this was not the career path I wanted to go down. However, I had NO idea what path I DID want to go down and my parents were constantly on my case about what I was going to do with my future, so I told them to just give me one year to take time for myself and figure things out without any pressure – and thankfully, they allowed me to do just that.
Again, I had no idea what route I even wanted to start with and the only passion I knew I had at that time was fitness – it was the one consistent thing I was passionate about since I joined the gym at thirteen. I ended up applying for a front desk position at a local gym nearby where I would greet incoming members and check them in… Let me tell you – I fell in LOVE with this job! Not only was it the easiest job ever, but I got to talk to people all day which I absolutely loved because I got to know so many amazing and different human beings. Although it certainly wasn’t a job that could pay the bills, I was living with my parents at the time after college so I could afford to work there temporarily with have zero rent to pay!
After a few months of working at the gym, I met COUNTLESS different personal trainers and every time they would come in I would ask them about their career: How they liked being a personal trainer, what was it like, the pros and cons, what clientele they worked with, etc. Then, one day, one of the most well-known trainers in the area that I would talk to regularly asked me why I wasn’t a personal trainer. I told him that I was obviously thinking about it, but had doubts that I could make it work as a full-time career because my parents didn’t believe it was possible which instilled fear/doubt in me.
He ended up telling me how successful he was as a trainer and that he saw all the same qualities in me – the curiosity and excitement to learn, the drive, and what he believed was most important – the ability to connect so easily with other human beings. This guy was one of the MOST convincing humans I’ve ever met. The certainty and belief in his voice. He was so confident that I was MEANT to be a trainer and that this was 100% my calling.
If it wasn’t for him, I do not think I would be where I am today – bless his soul. Because of his assuredness and confidence, I ended up taking a leap of faith and studied for my personal training certification, quit my front desk job at the gym, and paid rent at an independent training studio where I would eventually start my own independent personal training business!
For the first 6 months, my business was up & down with clients trickling in here and there because I was scared to market and put myself out there – I didn’t want to be annoying! But eventually, I told myself that if I was really going to make this a full-time career, I needed to grow some balls and be courageous enough to really showcase how great of a trainer I could be for others – and once I let go of the fear of putting myself out there, MAN – my training business took OFF.
Clients were constantly pouring in – I didn’t even know it was possible to be so busy at the time! I felt so blessed and excited that so many amazing human beings put their trust in me to help them and it was such a fulfilling time in my life! Of course with in-person training, your time and resources are limited because you can only work with so many people in a single day. So eventually, I decided to open up online training spots to work with clients outside of Arizona who wanted nutrition and workout programs and accountability, but didn’t necessarily need or want someone to be there with them!
I ended up falling head over HEELS in love with online training because 1) I love anything that has to do with computers – I’m quite tech savvy and I love graphic design as I’m quite creative and 2) I could focus so much more on getting to know my clients as people because we weren’t solely focused on counting their reps/making sure their form was perfect which is what in-person sessions consisted of!
I felt like online nutrition/fitness coaching was EVERYTHING that I loved wrapped up into one so I eventually transitioned my business from full time in-person, to a hybrid of in-person and online training, and then eventually to full-time online coaching! I will say it was slightly heart breaking saying good bye to my in-person clients who became absolute family to me and there are days that I do miss that in-person interaction, but the joy and creativity that online training has brought to my life has been 100-fold and I’m so thankful that I ever had the opportunity to do both – who knows though, maybe one day I’ll go back to a hybrid model! But for now, being an online nutrition & fitness coach is such a joy and blessing to me every single day because I get to help women from around the WORLD change their entire lives!
